The third game of the day on Thursday featured the #2 seeded YULA Panthers against the #15-seeded Akiva Hebrew Day School Pioneers. YULA opened up the game with a triple on their first possession, and got up 11-0 early on. With strong play from guard David Sassoon and a buzzer-beating lay-in from Yair Isaacs, YULA took a comfortable lead at the end of the first quarter, 17-5.

In the second quarter, YULA managed to pull away from Akiva, with two triples from Evan Teichman and many players contributing across the board. Josh Kornblum played solid down low for Akiva, but it was not enough to stop YULA’s balanced attack. At the end of the first half, it was 39-11, YULA. Sassoon led YULA with eight points in the first half, and Josh Kornblum led Akiva with five.

In the third quarter, YULA continued to pull away further from Akiva, with continued strong play from Sassoon and a heat-check from Alan Gindy. By the end of the 3rd quarter, YULA had accumulated over a 40-point lead over the Pioneers.

By the fourth quarter, YULA had clinched the game, and many three-pointers were hoisted by both teams. Sven Skinner scored five consecutive points for Akiva, but that was not even remotely close enough to bring Akiva back in this one. The final score was 64-21, in favor of the Panthers. Alan Gindy led YULA with 21 points respectively, and Josh Kornblum led Akiva with 7 points.

The Panthers move on in Tier 1 and will play the winner of the Flatbush/Scheck Hillel matchup, while the Pioneers will move into Tier 2.
