In the first Tier 2 semi-final match up of the night, the David Posnack Jewish Day School Rams went up against the Katz Yeshiva High School Storm of South Florida. The Rams were not ready to let their chances of a Tier 2 championship get away to the Storm. Katz was also prepared to take on whatever the Rams would throw at them. Early in the first quarter, Katz got up quick with some buckets and was in high spirits. With two minutes left of the first quarter, Katz was up by 8. Despite the difference in score, Jonathan Rhein of the Rams, played tough and scored valuable points for his team. Katz proved to the Rams in the first quarter they were in it ending the quarter up 10, with a score of 17-7.
The Rams brought a newfound energy and intent to win in the second quarter. Sophomore, Evan Oppen, scored two threes this second quarter, his third scored three of the game. The Rams truly made a quick comeback this quarter, with the game tied up 25-25 with three minutes left. The last minutes of the second quarter were intense, with shots coming and going from both sides. The Rams closed up Katz’s lead, and the quarter ended with Katz up, 31-28.
The Rams started the second half ready and excited to rumble up the Katz Yeshiva Storm. In the first half, the Storm thought they were going to have an easy game, but the Rams gave them a run for their money. Towards the end of the third quarter, Katz gained their lead back with fast breaks and many strong drives to the basket. Katz scored critical points in the last minute of the quarter, including Harry Munter, who scored a layup that ended the quarter with them up by 20, the score 55-35.
The fourth quarter gave the Rams a mere 8 minutes to prove themselves to be in the finals for Tier 2. Katz showed incredible teamwork, skills, and determination in this game. The Rams weren’t willing to give up their spot in the finals no matter how much they were down by. Katz finished the game 76-61, earning them a spot in the Tier 2 Championship. Zack Izyaguyev led the Storm with 20 points while Jonathan Rhein had 15 points for the Rams.
